Ann Hess Pottery
I make functional pottery that is attractive to eye and hand. Each piece serves its function and is well made. The glazes include handsome earth tones, blues and greens, as well as bright cranberry. My degree in chemistry informs experimentation with glazes and colors. All glazes are lead free. Exploration of texture and supple altering of thrown forms and new hand built forms add interest and variety. Each piece is hand made with its own individuality.
Much is being published today about the importance of family meals. My pottery is designed for preparation and serving of food, to give pleasure to the cook and the family at table. Pottery provides a safe, attractive container to cook in the oven and microwave and to store food in the frig or freezer.
Pottery makes a much appreciated gift for weddings, holidays and as a hostess gift. Personalize it with notes and recipes. I love the joint designing that comes with customer orders. I am usually stretched to try new things and expand my vision. Examples include the communion ware at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and St Phillip's Lutheran Church in Roanoke designed in collaboration with members.
