Ann Hess Pottery

My work is characterized by pots that are not only attractive to the eye but also to the hand. Each piece must serve its function as well as be well made. The glazes include handsome earth tones, blues and greens, as well as bright cranberry. Experimentation with glazes and colors is a continuing source of enjoyment. All glazes are lead free.
Exploration of texture and supple altering of the thrown form adds interest and variety. Many pieces are one of a kind. All pieces are individually hand made and therefore each has its own individuality.

Pottery is an intimate art form. It is not only viewed with the eye, it must be held in the hand. Lips touch the mugs. Many customers tell me they start the day with one of my mugs. This gives me pleasure as well as challenges me to strive for excellence in the whole design and execution of each piece.

Much is being published today about the importance of family meals. My pottery is designed to serve not only in the preparation but in the serving of food; to give pleasure to the cook as well as to the family at table. Even to give pleasure to the hand and eye during clean up.

Working with customers, I have designed and made unique pieces for very specific needs. I made the communion ware at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and St Phillip's Lutheran Church in Roanoke with collaboration of members.

I love the joint designing that comes with customer orders. I am usually stretched to try new things and expand my vision. I have made specific size sets of bowls for families who enjoy large salads, for families who want specific size and designed cereal bowls, and a challenge of dinner ware with no two alike.
